Izor Rejtő, a young office clerk and a new father living in Budapest, Hungary, was conscripted into the Austro-Hungarian army following the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand on June 28, 1914. During the course of the war, he embarked on a journey spanning 25,000 miles, where he bore witness to a spectrum of experiences, ranging from humor, horror, hope, to being a part of historical events. His six-year odyssey comprised vivid firsthand accounts of World War I battles on the Eastern Front, including Ukraine, incarceration in Siberian POW camps, the tumultuous days of the Bolshevik revolution, and developments regarding peace treaties that would ultimately reshape the world.

Paperback and Kindle now available on Amazon
THE RELUCTANT ADVENTURER picks up the family story in September of 1939, just as the Germans are threatening to invade Poland. It was some 20 years after Thomas’ father, Izor, returned from a Siberian prisoner-of-war camp; Izor was 54 and Thomas was 13.
Set in Europe during World War II, THE RELUCTANT ADVENTURER follows childhood friends who are drawn into a life of deportation, resistance, forced labor, misery, splendor and love. It’s a a timeless novel about youth, recklessness, audacity, anguish and friendship.
Nobel laureate Albert Camus, who was the Chief Editor at Gallimard the French edition, "Aventurier malgré soi," was first published in 1958 wrote; “I found it refreshing, for once, to read a cheerful, horror story.”
In an excerpt from his review in the Le Canard Enchainé, René Lefèvre wrote; “...It is not enough to dislike war. What is even more important is to sicken others over the very idea of it. At that, Thomas Rejto could very well succeed.”
